This Teaching Guide includes teaching notes on Reading Nonfiction and Writing Nonfiction for each title in Go facts Series 1: Animals. To teach the reading and writing of information reports systematically, work through the lessons in the order they are presented, teaching a reading and writing lesson on each resource in the series.

The reading lessons in this guide are suitable for small groups and fit easily into the guided reading component of the reading block.

Using the Writing Nonfiction Lesson Notes

By following each reading lesson with a lesson in writing nonfiction students learn to use the same structures and strategies modelled in the Go facts resources in their own nonfiction writing.

Using the Writing Mini-lessons

Writing mini-lessons with blackline masters cover each stage of the writing process. These are for teachers to dip into and use at any time with any of the resources in Go Facts, depending on the needs of students and the stage of their writing.

Assessment

Blackline Master 15 is in two parts. The top section is an assessment progress checklist. Teachers can record a student’s progress in writing information reports by entering a date in the three columns. Suggestions for informal assessment appear throughout the reading and writing lessons. The bottom section of Blackline Master 15 is a merit certificate for students when they publish their final reports.
