Go Facts integrates science with reading and writing. These downloadable PDF resources are ideal for use in the literacy program, or during a science thematic unit about one of the topics in the series.

This Teaching Guide includes teaching notes on Reading Nonfiction and Writing Nonfiction for each title in Series A- the four seasons- Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. To teach the reading and writing of information reports systematically, work through the lessons in the order they are presented, teaching a reading and writing lesson on each resource in the series.

Reading the Nonfiction Text

The reading lessons in this guide are suitable for small groups and fit easily into the guided reading component of the reading block.

Using the Writing Nonfiction Lesson Notes

By following each reading lesson with a lesson in writing nonfiction, students learn to use the structures modelled in the Go facts resources in their own writing. 

Using the Writing Minilessons

Writing mini-lessons with supportive blackline masters cover each stage of the writing process. These are for teachers to dip into and use at any time with any of the books in Go Facts, depending on the needs of students and the stage of their writing.

Assessment

Suggestions for informal assessment appear throughout the reading and writing lessons. Blackline Master 15 on page 32 provides a rubric for assessment, as well as a merit certificate. Teachers can print a page for each student, and record each student’s progress in writing nonfiction texts. Teachers may also use the scoring rubrics that appear at the end of each Writing Nonfiction lesson.
